Understanding Sampler Drive Space Size Limitations

In the legends on the various charts below, we mention the maximum per-drive space that can be accessed by the different samplers. This point seems to confuse many people, who think that just because they buy a 50GB drive, their sampler should be able to use all 50GB. Sorry but it just doesn't work that way. Many older samplers have limitations built into their operating systems that determine how much space they will format and access on any hard drive, no matter how large the hard drive is. Why is this? Well, you must remember that when many of these samplers were made ten or more years ago, a 2GB SCSI hard drive was considered large, and was usually quite expensive as well. Therefore, the samplers of those days were developed to only support the hard drive sizes that were popular and somewhat affordable for that time. For instance, the Kurzweil K2000 can only access 2GB, Akai MPC2000 Classic can only access 1GB and even a newer sampler like the Korg Triton can only access 4GB of per-drive space.

So no matter how large a hard drive you buy for your sampler, you will be restricted to actually using only the amount that the operating system can format and access. Therefore, it's a good idea to buy a drive that is on the smaller side in order not to waste huge amounts of disk space. You may see some people on eBay selling huge SCSI hard drives (50GB, 73GB, even 181GB!) for use with samplers and, besides the fact that these drives are used with who knows how many years of wear-and-tear on them, they are a poor choice for use with your sampler because they are way too big for the sampler to access. SCSIforSamplers.com only sells smaller, new hard drives that are a better match for the samplers they will be used with.

If you need more storage space for your files, the best way to get around the drive space limitations is to take advantage of the SCSI ability to daisy-chain multiple hard drives together and assign them different SCSI ID numbers. For instance, since the Kurzweil K2600 can only access 8GB per drive, by using two 9GB drives, each set on a different SCSI ID number, we can now access a total of 16GB of storage. Or you can use three 9GB drives and get 24GB of storage space. So using multiple drives is a good way to get around the small per-drive space limitations of the older samplers. We offer package pricing when you purchase more than one hard drive unit, so contact us for more information and pricing if you want to buy multiple hard drives to maximize your sampler's storage capacity.

These same per-drive space limitations apply to media card drives and all other SCSI storage devices as well. Media Card drives are a good storage choice because when one CF card is full, you can just pop it out and pop in another one. Your storage potential is unlimited.

If you have questions about any of these topics or options, please call or email us and we will be glad to help you figure out the setup that is best for you and your sampler(s).

Also see our page on Understanding SCSI Devices for information about the various storage devices that are available for use with your sampler.

a - 2GB is the maximum per-drive space that the K2000/K2vx (all models) can access. These drives will only work with os version 3.54 and higher, so be sure to check your version before ordering. If you need an OS upgrade for your K2000, contact DG Audio Repair.
b - The maximum per-drive space that can be accessed by the K2500 and K2600 samplers (all models) is 8GB, which is accessed in 2GB partitions.
c - The K2661 does not support installing an internal hard drive, as the case is too small and there is no room for mounting the drive inside. These drives are supported for external use only.

All Ensoniq samplers require that the optional SCSI interface be installed in order to use any SCSI devices.
a - 8GB is the maximum per-drive space that can be accessed by this sampler. In order to access this amount of drive space, the drive must be formatted using the Chicken Systems Translator software. If formatted by the sampler, the drive will only format to 2GB. We can format the drive to 8GB for you and install the os so it will be ready for use.
b - The TS-10 and TS-12 have read-only SCSI interfaces, meaning that they can load samples from a SCSI drive but cannot save data to any type of SCSI device.
c - These models may require an external powered terminator in order to work with this SCSI drive. Contact us for more information.
